Modern families are a far cry from their previous generation. Especially the male role in today’s nuclear family. Fathers that cook. Do laundry. Pick their children up from school. And yes, even change diapers.
On a recent visit to my parents, I was reminded of how far gender roles have evolved in a generation. During our trip, we left our children in my father’s care to run a few local errands. One of the perks we rarely enjoy being so far from family. Thirty minutes into our drive, I receive a call from my father proclaiming, “you have to come back, Elad has a 💩”
As an FTF (full time father), changing diapers is just one part of my many daily routines.
But for my dad, it was unexplored territory for him. Dare I say, crippling.
I enjoy my role as an FTF. The opportunity to play an integral role in my children’s early development and in later years, the familiar face that greets them at school pickup and asks about their day. That cooks and heats up their dinner. And tucks them in bed at night. It’s limited my opportunities in the workplace and can often be a challenge, juggling parenting and work from home. But it’s precious time (which goes far too fast) that my children will have for the rest of their lives. And it’s my hope they’ll see the value in it when they decide how to raise their families.
In these times as families come together, self isolating in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we hope families appreciate the opportunity this time brings. For us, the moments to engage in experiences that truly matter as a family can be had in the best of times and the worst of times. From our family at Hey Moona to yours, we wish you safety, health and to never stop seeking.
